Class Notes

8.4.2011
We have nailed down October, 2013 as the month for our 45th Reunion. There will be a survey circulated among the Planning Team to determine which weekend in October, 2013 will be the most desirable to present to you.  I am hoping to convene the Team sometime next month.

In the meantime, there are two of our classmates that are hurting because they've just lost loved ones.  Here are the obituaries for Tom Malapanes' Mom and Jim Genellie's Father:

Condolences ... We extend our sympathies to classmates Tom Redmond and Viv Geiger Hildebrand whose veteran fathers died recently.

The Forty-Fifth Reunion of the Class of 1968  ... Believe it or not, we are actually closer to the 45th reunion of our class than we are to the 40th reunion. Because no official planning meetings have even taken place, we are seeking your assistance at this early stage. As we have typically done, we are going to ask you to pick a time of the year at which to hold the event(s). Also, we are seeking ideas as to where you would like to hold the event(s). Please be as specific as possible, rather than stating that your first choice is Summer of 2013, please pick the exact month that would work best for you based on what you know now. All 12 months of the year are wide open for discussion. Numerous activities can be suggested as well. If you have a specific format that you would like to see, please let us know that as well.

Got an idea? What do you next? Get in touch with your First Line Contact and let him/her know the answers to these and any other questions that you would like to have answered. You will be kept abreast of the results through subsequent issues of Class Notes, the new Class of '68 Blog and the Class of '68 Face Book Page.

Let’s Get Connected ... Speaking of the Class of ’68 blog and Facebook page … have you joined? Elizabeth Dent Wyse has brought us into the 21st century by starting a Facebook page and a blog for our class. She says it has a bit slow to get a solid following started and offers the following advice if you are feeling a bit blog-challenged.

About the Google Blog, Elizabeth says, anyone can click on the link (http://mainewest68.blogspot.com/) and read the blogs or articles (like Class Notes which will include all pictures and graphics) without signing in. However, if you’d like to comment on articles or ‘follow’ the blog you will need to sign in with one of these accounts: Google aka Gmail, Twitter, Yahoo, AIM, Netlog or Open ID.

About the The Class of 1968 Facebook page, she says, the only requirement is that you have a Facebook page yourself to access the class’ page. Class Notes will also be posted there, but it will not include pictures or graphics due either to Facebook limitations or, according to Elizabeth, her own limitations!

Any way you choose to stay in touch with your class is great and we will continue to offer options to get the news out! If you would, please let your FLC know your preferred method of communication … snail mail, e-mail attachments, Facebook, or the Maine West blog … we value your input!

The Blizzard of 2011
For those of us that are still living in and around the Chicago metropolitan area, we experienced the Blizzard of 2011 - which came very close to toppling "The Big Snow" of 1967.  You remember what you were doing at that time of your life, don't you?

The pictures on the right are of … yep … it’s me! John Carl working diligently to find a way out!

On the Maine West Class of 1968 Facebook page, classmate, Marilyn Dickert Witney posted, “Thundersnow!!!Whoever even heard of it? 22 inches at ORD; 70mph winds. We dug out yesterday, and we're business as usual ... but now it's 20 below wind chill!”

Got pictures to share? Please do! We’ll post them on our Facebook page!!
Who’s Got Cruise Pics??
We have posted the cruise pictures from the Maine West Alumni site, but aren’t there others? Did you go on the cruise? Do you have pictures to share?? If so, please post them on the Facebook page or e-mail them to Elizabeth Wyse and she’ll post them for you! Thanks!

Don't forget to visit the Alumni Association Web Site often to keep up with news about the school and our class. Email addresses will be found there as well as the names and pictures (if available) of our classmates that have passed away.

Featured Classmate . . . . .  Mary Ann Jados Waldron
Birth Place: Chicago, IL [Des Plaines didn’t have any hospitals then]. Grew up on Kennicott Ct. and do recall that River Road was often the scene of cars veering into the forest preserve after taking the curve too fast. We were in the area where basements flooded with every major rain.

Schools Attended:  St. Stephen Grammar School, Maine West High School, DePaul University for undergrad and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for my MBA.

Most Memorable Maine West recollections: Mr. Kiddle became a friend after graduation and for years we spoke and met frequently. Gustav Carlson instilled a love of Russian literature and culture although I always wondered if he was KGB sleeper cell. He encouraged me to travel to the USSR and I recall being there in 1968 when Czechoslovakia was invaded and Americans were not particularly welcome. I am grateful to Eldon Burke for his even-handed treatment of those of us involved in the underground newspaper Thermidorian. The last issue was distributed the morning of senior assembly and several of the faculty speakers mentioned it in their comments.
Martial/Family: Married Dave Steiner in 1969 and divorced in 1999. I consider his children my children and now enjoy grandchildren from both Val and Matt. In May 2002, my family came to the UK for my wedding to a Brit, David Waldron, which was held at the Duke of Woburn’s estate. David’s adult son and daughter live in the UK. My siblings – brother Paul, sisters Paulette and Kathe and their children make for a wonderful family which I visit when I return to Chicago. Our current home near Baltimore is my 16th address.  David and I look forward to retirement in Sedona, AZ as the 17th and final move.
Work Experience: Got involved in the business of medicine early on and worked for Carle Clinic in Urbana before moving to New Jersey as COO of NMR of America, a public company building and operating diagnostic imaging centers [MRI/CT etc]. Worked for medical manufacturers Picker International and then GE before starting my own company in 2005.
Currently: President, Traction Business Development, a boutique consultancy focusing on go-to-market strategy for health care providers. See http://www.tracbiz.com/
Interests: travel, gardening, cooking, and book club. Belize and Buenos Aires are on my wish list.
Closing thoughts: Pay it forward and don’t underestimate the large impact small courtesies can have. Try to do something monthly, contribute time or money, to social or religious or philanthropic initiatives. It makes you feel good.

CONDOLENCES
We extend our sympathy to Gary Kalas who lost his mother recently and to Christine Praxmarer Mayfield whose mother passed away on November 16.
